My research broadly concentrates on the intersection of consumer demand, producer concerns and public policy initiatives for land use, local food and health. I use structural location choice models and reduced form hedonic models to assess consumer preferences for neighborhood access to food and open space and link this to potential public policies concerning food access and diet. I have looked at consumer preferences for certified organic produce using a hedonic analysis of share prices in a CSA, an example of direct marketing. I am currently working on a producer survey to understand the economic decision-making of direct marketing producers that supply these consumers. What links these projects together is a belief in the importance of combining structural modeling, behavioral decisions and empirical analysis to understand the linkages between different aspects of land use, the food environment and relevant stakeholders.
